![]() Two goals from Martin Foster |
Town included Thompson and Atherton in their starting line up in place of Bushell and Grant in a 3-5-2 formation.
Straight from the kick off Town showed their intentions when Killeen forced a corner, but shortly afterwards Grays also looked to assert their authority and Young was forced to concede a corner after just four minutes.
On six minutes a sweet move involving Sugden and Forrest opened up an opportunity for Foster and he duly obliged to smash the ball home with his right foot to give Town a 1-0 lead on the night and 4-2 on aggregate... Town pressed forward again and Young missed with a free header from a corner. On 20 minutes, following a good run and cross by Doughty Forrest just headed wide. Town kept up the pressure and again Forrest went close with a snap shot that flew just over the bar. On 30 minutes there was concern for the Town management when Young had to go off for treatment on his shoulder, but there was even further concern 2 minutes later when Kennedy missed his punch at the ball, Atherton was on hand to clear off the line. At this point Town were playing the better football as apposed to Grays who launched it long and high at every opportunity, looking to exploit any aerial weakness. Atherton, Quinn and Young were coping well with everything though.
Grays 0 Halifax Town 1 Half Time
Grays started the second half as they did on Saturday, in the first leg, and threw bodies forward in an effort to reduce the arrears and on 55 minutes Knightley nodded home after a long cross to the far post evaded Kennedy. Town were stunned and just 2 minutes later Grays took the lead on the night and levelled on aggregate when Nutter scored from close range. Nerves were beginning to get the better of both sides as they both resorted to long and high balls. Town eventually got the ball down and as Killeen broke into the penalty area Mawer brought him down. Foster gleefully smashed home the resulting penalty. Sugden went off on 64 minutes to be replaced by Grant and Killeen went off injured soon after with Senior coming on. Despite 4 minutes of injury time Town held on to book their place in the final at the Walker Stadium.
Overall it was a fine team performance, full of the spirit that Chris Wilder has instilled into his squad. Credit also to the Town fans who travelled down to Grays and made plenty of noise in their support of the Shaymen.
