The New Year starts with a 1 v 1 home draw against Altrincham and a performance that has left Manager Chris Wilder questioning his players' inability to finish teams off.

The Manager was clearly a frustrated man after a game where his side spurned chances and too often failed to trouble visiting Keeper Stuart Coburn when in promising positions.

Nathan Joynes returned to the starting line up after injury, partnering Chris Senior.Steve Torpey returned on the left allowing Lewis Killeen to switch wings and the front men linked well in the opening stages to force a couple of corners.

Greg Young limped off after 9 minutes and returned to the field a minute later as Altrincham took the lead.With the defence covering Pat McFadden was able to skip round a couple of challenges and square the ball, giving Peter Thompson the easiest of tasks and he duly obliged from 4 yards out.

Town struggled to cope with McFadden's pace and Thompson's aerial ability and it was their combined efforts that set up a 21^st minute shooting opportunity for Robbie Lawton and his 20 yard shot flew just wide of Craig Mawson's post.

Joynes and Killeen combined to release Senor but he was incorrectly adjudged offside by a very late flag then Torpey shot over from 20 yards.Tom Kearney then shot straight at Coburn after good play with Senior.

Town were dealt their first injury blow of the afternoon when Gus Uhlenbeek limped from the field to be replaced by Ryan Toulson and it was from a cross by the substitute that Senior forced another Coburn save.

Penalty appeals were waved away in the 35^th minute when Young flicked a Torpey corner on to Joynes who appeared to be held back as he shaped to shoot.The Referee Mr Coote incurred the wrath of the home fans when he halted play for a foul on Senior despite Torpey having a shooting opportunity in acres of space.However the wrath was short lived.Toulson's free kick was met by Adam Quinn and he set up Joynes for the equaliser and the third goal of his loan spell from Barnsley.

Greg Young was carried off on a stretcher within 5 minutes of the restart with a suspected knee injury and Jake Wright took his place at the heart of the Town defence.

Town pressed but were unable to work a clear opening. There was a familiar Shay sight of Steve Bushell receiving a yellow card and he was replaced later to a deserving ovation from both sets of Supporters.

Tom Kearney's curling 65^th minute free kick needed a touch but it evaded 3 Town players.Joynes header from a Torpey cross lacked power then there was an escape of the other end off the field.Another ex Town player, Val Owen, raced clear on the right and his dangerous cross was deflected away for a corner.

Ryan Sugden replaced Senior with 10 minutes remaining and he almost became the hero when we linked with Killeen but his goal bound shot was somehow tipped away for a corner.Joynes powerful header from Torpey's corner looked destined for the back of  the net but a wonderful clearance saw the game end 1 v 1.3 minutes of additional time were played but given Grey Young's injury and 5 second half substitutions there is some justification in suggestion the added time should have easily doubled the figure played.
