Halifax Town end their 06 /07 campaign on the road with an 18th defeat that plunges The Shaymen back into the bottom four. But with home games against Crawley and Stevenage to come in the next week, the final Conference position is very much in their own hands.
However Chris Wilder will be without the services of the injured Ryan Cresswell and those of Shane Smeltz who became the 2nd Town player to be shown a red card this week. The Kiwi clashed with a Forest Green player after the final whistle and both were red carded.
A first half goal from ex Hereford man Danny Carey-Bertram separated the sides at the interval after he finished a move on the right with a neat turn and shot.Tom Kearney and Danny Forrest both has shots but failed to trouble Ryan Robinson in the home goal.
Town threatened more after a half time reshuffle saw Darryn Stamp and Jake Wright replace Steve Torpey and groin injury victim Cresswell.Stamp almost finished off Smeltz's run into the area and Forrest shot over from the edge of the area as Town fought for an equaliser.
But, they were undone on the break by the pace of substitute Les Afful who held off Matt Doughty's challenge on the half way line. His run took him towards goal but Craig Mawson forced him wide but the former Exeter man kept his composure and slotted home.
Despite plenty of possession Town lacked the killer touch and frustrations boiled over after the final whistle and Chris Wilder is now without 2 strikers as we enter the most important week in the Club's recent history where a win at home to Crawley will change the picture significantly.
Chris Wilder has praised the fans in recent weeks for their wonderful backing at home games and this is needed more than ever at The Shay on Tuesday evening, kick off 7.45pm.
