Halifax Town have drawn 2-2 away at Cambridge United despite being down for 10 men for the second half.

Jon Shaw was sent off just before the halftime break for a challenge a minute after being booked and will miss Tuesday night's away game at Kidderminster Harriers.

The former Burton Albion striker had put the Shaymen ahead on 18 minutes from the penalty spot after he had been bundled to the ground. However Cambridge hit back with an equaliser on 24 minutes with Marvin Robinson tapping home his first goal for them.

Jimmy Quinn's side took the lead on 55 minutes when Robert Wolleaston was given too much time and his shot found the top corner of the net.

Town boss Chris Wilder reorganised his troops and hit a deserved equaliser through Cortez Belle with a few minutes left of the game. Matt Doughty' throw found Lewis Killeen, who held off his marker to leave Belle with a chance to score and he blasted the ball past former Canvey Island goalkeeper Danny Potter to send the visiting fans into raptures.

Halifax started the game brightly and forced the first corner of the game on 6 minutes as Alex Bailey found Shaw and his cross went out for a corner. Tom Kearney's ball into the box saw Greg Young rise and head over the bar.

Town attacked down the left with Doughty and Taylor combining, the fullback's cross was handled and referee Mr Halliday awarded a free kick. Kearney's ball in was taken by Potter at the far post and his quick kick tried to find Courtney Pitt on the left, he found his fullback but the cross into the box was well taken by Adam Legzdins.

Town took the lead on 18 minutes, Belle's ball found Taylor on the right, he knocked the ball back for Tom Kearney and his ball into the box saw Shaw fouled. Despite a delay in the kick being taken, Shaw made no mistake and put the Shaymen ahead.

A minute later Alex Bailey was fouled on the right, Kearney found Shaw but his head was over the bar but the referee had already blown for a foul.

Quinn headed away a cross on 24 minutes only for the ball to be crossed back into the six yard area. The Town defence and goalkeeper didn't react as Marvin Robinson nipped in at the far post to tap home.

Lewis Killeen, who made his first start for a few games combined with Shaw on 28 minutes, the ball was played to find Taylor on the right hand side of the box but cross cum shot was beaten away by the goalkeeper and cleared.

Adam Quinn timed a challenge in the box on Robinson to perfection a minute later as Cambridge went looking for a second.

Taylor on the right hand side turned quickly and found Bailey; his cross found Killeen but his first touch was too heavy and took him away from goal. He tried to play the ball back to Bailey but the linesman's flag was up for offside.

Gavin Hoyte headed wide from a free kick and then Taylor was inches from putting Town ahead as Doughty's inviting cross eluded him.

Greg Young tried to shepherd a ball back to his goalkeeper on 39 minutes and then tried to head the ball but Robinson nipped in but the ball didn't fall kindly to the ex Oxford striker and Town cleared.

Shaw was then sent off and Town had to reorganise themselves to have a chance to getting back into the game.

The Shaymen started the second half brightly with Lewis Killeen winning a corner within 2 minutes. However Kearney's corner was taken well by Potter. Tom Kearney was fouled on the left side, Matt Doughty's ball in was met by Quinn but he only saw his header go wide.

Then Cambridge took the lead with Wolleaston's shot worthy of winning any game and then could have been 3-1 up within 2 minutes. A shot was only parried by Legzdins and the ball was tapped in with the rebound but the linesman's flag ruled the goal out.

Daryl Taylor could have levelled the game on 61 minutes, he was played in behind the Cambridge defence but he took the ball a little wide. He turned his man but his shot had little power and was straight at Potter.

Chris Wilder brought Steve Bushell on for Adam Quinn as he aimed to get something out of the game with a change in system and the midfielder had a shot blocked after being set up by Killeen within 5 minutes of being on the field.

Anthony Griffith picked up his fifth booking of the season on 73 minutes for a foul which will see him suspended for a game. The resulting free kick found Scott Rendell who fired wide of the goal.

Tom Kearney who was outstanding for the Shaymen this afternoon won the ball in midfield and set up Taylor but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper again.

Killeen won a corner in the 79th minute and Cortez Belle's header from Kearney's ball was straight at Potter.

A short back pass from Greg Young saw Marvin Robinson get into the box and go down as he tried to go around Adam Legzdins. The referee blew and the Town fans dreaded the rest but he booked the striker for a dive.

Cortez Belle then scored his first goal for the Shaymen with seven minutes remaining and was well deserved for an excellent performance.

Cambridge looked for a winner and Legzdins pulled off a fine save to deny Pitt, while Taylor went down the right, goalkeeper was out of his goal and he curled his shot into the side netting.

A fine result on the afternoon and Town will need to build on this result with a trip to Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday night. Kick-off 7.45.pm
