Halifax Town and Grays Athletic produced a goalless draw in front of the Setanta Sports cameras at The Shay. And, the point secured by Chris Wilders injury ravaged side continues the unbeaten record on home soil this season.
Wilder is simply unable to select the same side for 2 games running as injuries and suspensions take their toll.Going into this fixture the Manager was without the services of Rob Scott, Cortez Belle, Danny Forrest, Andy Campbell and Nicky Gray through injury.Substitutes Darryn Stamp and Alex Bailey are also carrying injuries and in an ideal world would not have been on the bench tonight.Add in Jon Shaw and Anthony Griffith who are suspended and the problems facing the Club at this current time are all too apparent.
But, despite the lengthy list of absentees The Shaymen will feel they could have taken all 3 points as late chances for Daryl Taylor and Darryn Stamp went begging.
Chances throughout the game were at a premium with defences and midfields on top.Grays pressed early with Ernie Cooksey heading wide but Town countered with Taylor's pace causing problems. He broke from the half way line but opted to shoot wide in the 24th minute when team mates were in better positions. Two minutes later he chased a long ball that Keeper Danny Knowles headed clear to Steve Torpey. His first time shot from distance lacked the power and was cleared.
Jake Wright linked well with Torpey on the left but there was no end product from a number of crosses.Torpey had a chance when he released Taylor then made ground to take the return pass but his right foot shot cleared the bar.
Darryn Stamp replaced Dean Oliver at the start of the second half and Town went in search of the opening goal.Wright and Taylor worked a shooting position for Torpey then Town had a let off as Cooksey shot across the goalmouth when well positioned.
Torpey's cross was cleared by defender Jon Ashton with Stamp ready to pounce then Lewis Killeen shot wide from 20 yards.Stamp again just missed out finishing off a Torpey cross.
Ryan Toulson's run and cross was cleared to Steve Bushell and his right foot shot narrowly failed to hit the target. And, with this many felt the final chance had come and gone. But two chances in a minute could have won the game for The Shaymen.Firstly Taylor latched onto a ball over the top and headed for goal but hesitated at the vital moment and the chance was gone.Killeen then fed Stamp on the left hand side of the penalty area; his shot beat Keeper Knowles but also missed the target.
Whilst the game may have been instantly forgettable a clean sheet is a positive.Town head south to Aldershot at the weekend and will be hoping some of the lads in the crowded treatment room may be ready for a return to action.
