In his after match comments Chris Wilder offered no excuses for his team's performance in this afternoon's 3 v 0 home defeat to Exeter City. And, he added that only 3 players had escaped his wrath after the match in which the final score could have been more emphatic.
The Grecians adapted to the abysmal conditions far better than The Shaymen and they took a 3rd minute lead when the games outstanding player, John Mackie, latched onto a long ball forward and was upended by Adam Legzdins. Richard Logan sent the Town keeper the wrong way from the spot, the Visitors has the lead and they weren't going to surrender it.
Town responded with Steve Torpey miskicking, due to the conditions, on the edge of the box. Exeter's break to the other end using Mackie's pace signified their intentions of a ball behind the Town rearguard and they used it on many occasions.
Logan's 16th minute effort cleared the bar then Darryn Stamp headed Matt Doughty's cross over after it was flicked on to him by Jon Shaw. The best Town spell of the first period followed with Lewis Killeen's shot deflected through to Keeper Paul Jones who saved his team moments later when he blocked Stamp's effort after Shaw had flicked on Ryan Toulson's long ball forward.
Mackie's pace took him away from Cortez Belle and he squared the ball to Wayne Carlisle who blazed his shot into the South Stand.Belle received a yellow card for a foul on Mackie shortly afterwards.Logan shot over form 8 yards and the Visitors held a single goal lead at half time.
Town opened the second period well but soon found their deficit doubled courtesy of substitute, and former Town player, Lee Elam.Handball appeals rang around The Shay from Simon Heslop's 30 yard shot but they were waived away by Referee Tierney.Exeter broke up field; Mackie beat Greg Young and crossed for Elam to tap the ball home on the far post.
Nicky Gray replaced Steve Torpey as Town looked for a way back into the game.Belle header a Heslop corner wide but a clear cup opportunity didn't arrive.
At the other end Mackie escaped, his shot beat Legzdins and hit the upright.Another substitution saw Daryl Taylor replace Lewis Killeen but it had little impact as Mackie finally got his name on the score sheet when he got clear of the defence and rifled his shot past Legzdins high into the net.
Jon Shaw shot inches wide and Jones saved well from a Heslop's 25 yard shot.Heslop and Gray both shot wide and the game ended with an emphatic win from the Devonian side.
Town will now regroup and focus on next Saturday's FA Trophy tie at home to Leamington.
