Halifax Town will return north this evening disappointed as the Shaymen lost 2-1 in the opening day of the season.

Chris Wilder admitted after the game he was massively disappointed at the result but he took many positives out of the game.

The afternoon could have been very different if Town had taken the lead in the opening minute of the game. Nick Crittenden's loose ball set Andy Campbell on a direct run towards the Weymouth goal and he tried to lift the ball over goalkeeper Jason Matthews, however a defender was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

A ball into Town's penalty area on 3 minutes bypassed the impressive Adam Quinn which found Conal Platt with plenty of time, his touch let him down and the ball went out of play for a goal kick.

New Weymouth skipper Simon Weatherstone played a ball behind the Town defence on 7 minutes for Stuart Beavon to chase, Craig Mawson came rushing out of the goal and the two players collided with their heads. Referee Mr Rodda gave the home side a freekick and much to the relief of everyone following Town he only produced a yellow card for Mawson.

However the incident left Mawson with concussion, he did continue to play for the full game - with Town not having a substitute goalkeeper on the bench.

A well worked freekick after Doughty's foul on Crittenden saw Paolo Vernazza set up Beavon on the edge of the box but the shot was easy for Mawson.

Lewis Killeen, who started the game on the left for Town did well down the flank and won the corner. Kearney's set piece was aimed towards Quinn but there was too much pace and the ball went out for a goalkick.

Killeen combined with Doughty on 24 minutes and the fullback's cross found Stamp stretching at the far post and he could only direct his header wide of the target.

Debutant Cortez Belle fouled Beavon in the corner, with gave Vernazza another set piece opportunity. His ball came to the edge of the box where the shot fell to Justin Richards 8 yards out unmarked and his shot was over the bar with questions of offside being asked of the assistant referee.

Matt Doughty and Tom Kearney combined on the left and gace Stamp another scoring opportunity, he got it on target but was straight at Matthews.

Andy Campbell forced a corner on the stroke of halftime. Kearney's ball in was headed powerfully by Belle but Matthews held onto the ball on the line.

There was still time for one final effort, a cross from the left came to Steve Bushell but his shot was deflected for a corner.

Weymouth started the second half brightly, Beavon ran onto a long ball over Rob Scott and his shot was saved by Mawson for a corner. Anton Robinson fired wide from the resulting set piece.

Steve Bushell and Rob Scott combined on the right with the fullback finding Stamp at the far post, he tried to head the ball back across goal but the ball was cleared by the home defence.

On 55 minutes, Weymouth took the lead. Vernazza ran at the Town defence, he found James Coutts towards the edge of the box. He held off a couple of challenges and fired past Mawson for the opening goal.

Town brought on Daryl Taylor for Danny Forrest which they had been awaiting to do since before the goal and Taylor showed glimpses of what he could do.

Stamp found Taylor on 65 minutes and he got behind the defence but his cross was cut out by Weatherstone back to the goalkeeper. There were appeals for a backpass but the referee waved them away.

Belle had another header towards goal from a Kearney freekick as Town looked for the equalised.

It was in the 76th minute when the equaliser arrived. Town won a corner through Taylor, substitute Steve Torpey's ball found Quinn, he layed it off for Tom Kearney. His shot was deflected on route to goal which earnt him his first goal for Halifax Town.

Town continued to go forward however Weymouth grabbed all three points as Anton Robinson had too much space with three minutes to go to fire past Mawson.

Halifax Town have two homes games this week and the league table is not decided after the first game. The table will no doubt look very different after the second week of the season.
