WFC Match :- Preview
Woking meanwhile have made a less than confident start and currently lie 19th in the League Table, 3 places behind ourselves. The corresponding fixture last season saw a convincing 3-0 Town victory, with goals from Gus Uhlenbeek, Nathan Joynes and Danny Forrest; while the away fixture finished in a 2-2 draw, with Town goals from Felix Bastians and a last minute own goal.
Now that things are coming together both on and off the field, the lads will be hoping for a good turn out on Tuesday night to help cheer them on their march up the table.
A Bit About Our Opponents
Woking Football Club, known as The Cards (from the Cardinal red of the red and white halves), was formed in 1889, though almost folded for financial reasons in 1910, but for the generosity of the then mighty Bolton Wanderers, who agreed to travel down to Woking to play a friendly match, giving them the funds they needed to stay afloat. The Wanderers apparently took sympathy upon the Cards, having hammered them 5-0 in a first round FA Cup tie the previous season.
Woking remained in the Isthmian Leagues for the majority of their history, bouncing up and down the various divisions before securing promotion to the Premier Division at the end of the 1989/90 season. The following season saw the club entering the limelight with some superb F A Cup performances, culminating in a 4-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in Round Three, with a hat-trick from Tim Buzaglo. The fourth round saw a trip to Goodison Park to face Everton, where the minnows were only beaten by a solitary Kevin Sheedy goal in front of 34,000 people.
Promotion to the Conference was achieved in 1991/92, finishing a very respectable eighth in their first season. The following season, the much travelled Clive Walker, the former Chelsea, Sunderland, Fulham and QPR winger, was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion and he was to prove the catalyst in the most successful period in the club's history. The FA Trophy was won 3 times in 4 years in 1994,1995 and 1997, beating Runcorn, Kidderminster and Dagenham respectively. The Cards also achieved five successive top five finishes in the Conference, including being runners-up in 1994/95 and 1995/96. Since then the club have consolidated their position in the top flight of football's non-league, despite some heavy off-field financial problems, and even reached the FA Trophy final again two years ago, this time suffering defeat at the hands of Grays Athletic.
