Facing a very severe wind in the first half all was going to plan for Halifax up to the thirty fifth minute with both sides having created just one half chances each up to this point.

Coulthard then gave away a needless foul towards the corner flag and a set move from Workington at the resulting free kick involving taking advantage of Halifax not correctly defending as a unit by marking vulnerable space let a Workington player have a free shot from the edge of the box which squirmed low and hard, through Proctor's legs and into the net. The response from Halifax was almost immediate with Oldroyd driving into the box before being rather crudely upended by the defender. Douglas tapped the resulting penalty to the keeper and just minutes later the referee ignored loud calls for a second Halifax penalty after the opposition keeper crudely upended Billington. With the strong wind behind them in the second half Halifax had the majority of the play but created little in the way of chances although Billington did fizzle a long range shot just past the post on some 60 minutes. In an effort to alter the tempo of the game Halifax brought on attacker Jack for defender Spratt in the 65th minute and regrettably this was the catalyst for a goal but it came courtesy of Workington after Coulthard failed to deal with the threat on the half way line. Workington scored a late third goal after good work on the bye line and Halifax were left to reflect on a 3-0 beating in a game where they created more goal scoring opportunities than their opponents.

Management Opinion. We will not let the fact that we did enough to win this game alter our view that we defended like schoolboys for the first, and crucial, goal: that certain players spent a good deal of the match 'hiding' or that certain players didn't play to instructions in the second half in that they did not play it out from the back as instructed.
