Workington 3 Halifax Town U19's 3
Halifax Town captured a fine point from high flying Workington - who had lost only one game in both the cup and league all season - and again were a little unfortunate not to return with all three points after taking the lead three times, creating more goal chances than their opponents [which has been the case for every game this season bar one] and being on the end of a very controversial penalty decision. As the game unfolded it became apparent that Halifax had suspended their normal passing game and seemed intent for playing more for position and keeping the Workington defenders on the turn. The result was a less controlled than normal display by Halifax but the production of a six goal thriller which surely delighted the neutrals. Halifax took the lead on ten minutes when Douglas delivered a free kick from out wide of real quality. The ball was whipped into the mixer with curve and pace and Kennedy needed only the faintest of touches with his head to direct the ball into the roof of the net. Workington had 2 half chances before being awarded a direct free kick in a central position just outside the Halifax box and Proctor pulled off a stunning save at his far post from an expertly delivered low shot. From the resulting corner the ball struck Coulthard on the forearm and the linesman flagged to indicate, to the disbelief of the Halifax entourage, that Coulthard had deliberately handled the ball. The penalty taker sent Proctor the wrong way and the score was 1-1. Halifax took the lead again early in the second half when a Kennedy free kick into the box was only partiallly dealt with by the Workington defender and Billington gleefully hooked the ball into the back of the net. Workington had nothing to offer in way of chances until the 75th minute. Billington had the ball at his feet just inside the Workington box but took his shot far too early allowing the keeper to make a confortable save followedby a quick long kick down the field over the out of position Town full back. McCreath, racing back to try and nullify the danger, only managed to divert the Workington's strickers low shot past his own keeper. More goals were still to follow and Sheriffe raced onto a long punt from Proctor past a rather static defender to push it past the stranded Workington keeper. Workington equalised with 5 minutes to go and Proctor earned plucky Halifax with a stunning point blank side in the last seconds.
